Far too many times, I’ve seen great technical people flounder when promoted into a quasi-managerial position. And it’s especially bad when a manager wants to try to isolate his folks to keep them from leaving. In reality, that’ll only serve to drive them away faster.

As a non-manager, I can say that the people I have worked for who were interested in my professional and technical development are the best to work for/with.

If you are worried about losing people because they have become good to great at what they do, you need to re-evaluate what you are doing. You should be worried about losing people because they can’t become good or great at what they do when working for you.
